Assistant Librarian (part-time)

Position Type: Part-time, hourly
Starting Wage: $12/hour
Hours: 10 hours per week (ideally two half days, 2-4:30pm or 4:30-7pm, and one full day, 2-7pm). The ideal candidate will work 10 hours per week with availability to cover additional hours (2-7pm Mon-Thurs and 9am-12pm Sat) when Head Librarian is off, approximately 4-5 weeks per year.

The Assistant Librarian is a key member of the library team, assisting with a variety of tasks that support library operations and enhance the patron experience. This part-time position is ideal for someone passionate about books, community service, and working in a dynamic, public-facing environment. The Assistant Librarian will work closely with the Head Librarian and Marketing Coordinator to deliver exceptional service, maintain library resources, and assist with programs and events. This position requires the ability to work on evenings and occasional Saturday mornings. The ideal candidate will grow with the position, increasing responsibilities with the potential to transition into the Head Librarian role in the future.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Patron Service:

  • Checking In and Out Resources: Handle circulation tasks using the library’s cloud-based web system.

  • Signing Up New Patrons: Assist new patrons with library registration and answer questions about library services.

  • Reserving Items: Facilitate reservations for items from partner libraries through the shared web system.

  • Book Recommendations: Provide personalized book recommendations and direct patrons to selections based on their areas of interest.

  • Technology Assistance: Assist patrons with computer usage, troubleshooting, and copying services.

Other Duties:

  • Reshelving Books: Ensure that materials are properly organized and shelved according to the library’s classification system.

  • Communicate with Patrons: Make phone calls and send emails to patrons regarding overdue items or other library matters.

  • Program Assistance: Support Head Librarian with children and adult programs as needed.

  • Event Support: Assist with library and partnership fundraising events, some of which may occur outside of regular library hours.

  • Training and Development: Work closely with Head Librarian to gain hands-on experience in library administration and operations as position evolves in coming years.

KEY COMPETENCIES & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Customer Service: Friendly, approachable demeanor and strong commitment to providing excellent service to the community.

  • Computer Skills: Proficient with computers and programs (including Microsoft Office, Gmail, etc.) and willingness to learn new web-based systems and library technologies.

  • Library Experience: Familiarity with Orangeville and partner libraries (Bloomsburg Public Library and Columbia County Traveling Library) preferred.

  • Passion for Books & Learning: Genuine enthusiasm for books, reading, and supporting library initiatives.

  • Organizational Skills: Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively.

  • Team Player: Ability to collaborate well with colleagues, partner library leaders, patrons, and community members.
